WORKSHOP COSTUME DESIGN FOR CREATIVITY: REUSE, RESIGNIFY, RECYCLE.

The International Festival of the Performing Arts- Panama 2018, sponsored by Teatro en Cìrculo, announces the Costume design for creativity workshop, by specialist from Uruguay Mariela Gotuzzo, who will be sharing her experience, knowledge and techniques Will share her knowledge and techniques in the confection of versatile and creative costumes and wardrobe with reusable material.

OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this workshop is to introduce the advance student or professional costume designer to a different view on the use and handling of various material (many of them in disuse or discarded) be them already confectioned pieces, textiles or elements with the purpose of: reusing, re-signifying and recycling them through the design of costumes for the Performing Arts.

Through research, experimenting and the study of different techniques of transformation and recycling, the participant may be able to develop their creative skills and reapply what is learned in the production of wardrobe and different aspects of a production: props, stage design and make up.

The workshop hopes to contribute in developing creativity through understanding materials and their possibilities of expression, applied to Performing Arts costumes and wardrobe, promoting the progression of skills and competencies for design.

METHODOLOGY
Research and practical activities that help in understanding and portray content learned during the workshop through direct handling of materials.

The hands-on workshop will be give the student the opportunity to work individually and in groups, individual and in groups, reflecting on the importance of team work, as well as the interaction with other creative professionals (stage designers, stage directors, photography directors, etc.) A working glossary of words and concepts will be provided that will help assess creative decisions. It incorporates techniques from the individual to the collective.

CONTENT

RESEARCH AND STUDY OF THE MATERIAL

  • Textures, will be generated from techniques such as application of heat, print and fabric.
  • Materials: understanding and use of materials in disuse, discarded. Or components of a costume.
  • Incorporation of elements.
  • Textiles, tailoring, textures, weight and fall.
  • Analysis of chromatic circle and color palettes. Use of color in costumes.
  • Influence of light.

CONSTRUCTION OF COSTUMES

CREATIVE TRIGGERS:

  • Representation in the costume design.
  • The costume as a communication system.
  • The body as support.
  • The costume in relation to the body and expressiveness. Analysis of the structure of human body.
  • Identifying the actors body, the characters and their serviceability to the play.
  • Visual perception.
  • Contrast.
  • Harmony.
  • Rhythm.
  • Sequence.
  • Intensity. Contextualization.

Mariela Gotuzzo (Uruguay)
Studied drawing, theatre costume design, head dresses, make up, aerography, bodypainting, characterization and special effects in Uruguay, Argentina, Spain and Austria. She is an artist with an extensive and versatile experience, from working for the carnivals to working for the theatre.  Because of her dynamic and contemporary approach, she has been asked to collaborate with renowned personalities in Uruguay and internationally, including Ballet del SODRE directed by Julio Bocca. Artist, designer, confectioner, wardrobe designer and make-up artist and teacher, she envisions her Projects with in the concept of recycling and reusing elements, and her workshops are in great demand in performing arts festivals in the continent.
